What is Lean Duplex 2101?

Lean Duplex 2101 (LDX 2101) is a type of stainless steel that combines good strength with corrosion resistance, making it suitable for general-purpose use. It has high mechanical strength, much like other duplex steels, and performs better than 300 series stainless steels when resisting cracking caused by exposure to chlorides. LDX 2101 uses manganese to maintain the right balance between its ferrite and austenite structure, which also helps reduce the amount of nickel needed, making it more affordable than 304L and 316L grades. Its lower alloy content also means it's less likely to develop unwanted intermetallic phases over time, giving it an edge in durability.

Lean Duplex 2101 is machinable, but like other duplex stainless steels, its high strength can make machining more difficult than standard austenitic grades. Machining speeds are generally slower and in order to achieve good results, it's critical to utilize sharp tools, follow the right cutting processes and make sure you're using enough coolants to control heat buildup.

Weldability

All common welding techniques work with duplex stainless steels, which have good weldability. Although they could be more difficult to weld than austenitic grades, their limited thermal expansion makes welds cleaner, and more stable by minimizing distortion and leftover stress.
